  1. What is cold rolled coil

Cold rolled coil, also known as CRC, is a type of steel product which is made out of hot rolled flat steel and is characterized by small thicknesses and specific applications.

Cold-rolled steel refers to low-carbon steel produced by a “cold rolling” method and processed at near normal room temperatures. Cold-rolled steel offers superior strength and machinability. Cold-rolled steel sheets are commonly used for engineered products where tight tolerances, concentricity, straightness and coated surfaces are required.

Cold-rolled steel is produced in cold reduction mills where the material is cooled at near room temperature, followed by annealing and/or tempers rolling. This process produces steel that has a wide range of surface finishes and is superior in tolerance, concentricity, and straightness compared to hot-rolled steel. Cold-rolled steel contains a low carbon content, and an annealing method makes them softer than hot-rolled sheet. Cold-rolled steel products are commonly produced in sheets, strips, bars and rods.

2.Cold-rolled coil classification, product range and properties

The standards applied in different countries to set the requirements for cold-rolled steel, such as EN 10130, EN 10268, EN 10209, ASTM A1008 / A1008M, DSTU 2834, GOST 16523, GOST 9045, GOST 17066 and others, specify steel grades and size ranges for cold-rolled coils, their application (profiling, cold forming, enamelling, general use, etc), mechanical properties, surface quality and other parameters.

3.Cold-rolled coils according to European standards

The most frequently followed European standards for producing cold-rolled coils are EN 10130, EN 10268 and EN 10209.

EN 10130 is applied to cold-rolled coils made of the low-carbon DC01, DC03, DC04, DC05, DC06 and DC07 steel grades for cold forming without coating, with a minimum width of 600 mm and a minimum thickness of 0.35 mm.

4.Features of Cold Rolled Coil

The main features of cold-rolled coils include accurate dimensional tolerances, enhanced mechanical properties, and better surface quality than hot-rolled sheets.

Cold rolling also makes it possible to create thinner steel sheets that can’t be produced in hot-rolling mills. The main industries where cold-rolled coils are used include machine building, consumer goods, construction, automotive. When it comes to the construction industry, cold-rolled coils are mainly used to produce façade elements, steel structures, bent closed and open profiles, etc.
